As Face ID and Touch ID options have become common on most modern iPhones for unlocking your device, most people rarely use their password to unlock their iPhones. Because of this, there is a high chance of forgetting your iPhone password and you might be in trouble if you need it to unlock your iPhone when there is some issue with your Face ID or Touch ID or you just need to enter your password for changing some setting.
Unfortunately, the only way you could reset a forgotten password on your iPhone is to perform a factory reset on your device. This means all your data and settings, including your password, will be reset, allowing you to set up a new password on your iPhone. However, if you have enabled iCloud backup on your iPhone, you can easily restore all the deleted data once you reset your password.
How to reset password on iPhone if you forget it
There are three ways in which you can reset the forgotten password on your iPhone. You can either use iTunes or iCloud on your PC or use the recovery mode on your iPhone to reset the password. You will need access to a computer and a USB cable to connect to your iPhone to your PC for any of these methods to work.
Follow the below step by step instructions to reset the forgotten password on your iPhone and also to restore all your deleted files and data.
Method 1: Using Recovery Mode
If you don’t have access to iTunes or iCloud or have never used or set them up on your iPhone, you can still reset your password by entering the recovery mode on your iPhone.
Once in the recovery mode, you need to perform a factory reset to reset your password and this will erase all your data including your files, apps, and photos. Here is how to reset the forgotten password on your iPhone using the recovery mode.
Open iTunes on your PC. If you do not have iTunes installed on your computer, you can use this link to download and install iTunes and then proceed to the next step.
Now connect your iPhone to your PC using a USB cable. There are different ways in which you can enter into the recovery mode based on your iPhone model.
If you have an iPhone 8 or newer, you need to press and quickly release the volume up and volume down buttons one by one on your device and then press and hold the side button until you enter the recovery mode.
If you have an iPhone 7, then you need to press and hold the volume down and the side buttons on your device at the same time until you enter the recovery mode.
If you have an iPhone 6S or older, then you need to press both the home and the side buttons on your device at the same time until you enter the recovery mode.
Once you have entered the recovery mode on your iPhone, you will get a notification on the iTunes on your PC. Select the restore option from the notification to proceed.
iTunes will now begin to download the software for your iPhone and will reset all your data and settings. Once the process is complete your iPhone will automatically restart and you can set up a new password and start using your iPhone.
Method 2: Using iCloud
If you have iCloud and Find My enabled on your iPhone you can use the remote erase option on Find My to reset your iPhone and set a new password. Note that your phone needs to be connected to the internet for this method to work. Follow the below steps to reset the forgotten password on your iPhone using iCloud.
Open the Find My option in the iCloud website by visiting this link from a web browser on your PC.
Log in using the same Apple ID you use on your iPhone to proceed.
Now select your iPhone from the list of available devices by clicking on the All devices option at the top of the page.
Select the ‘Erase iPhone’ option and after confirmation, a remote factory reset will be performed on your device and all your data, including your old password, will be removed.
Once your iPhone has finished restarting, you can set a new password and restore all your deleted data by selecting the restoring from iCloud backup option during the initial setup process.
Method 3: Using iTunes
If you have connected your iPhone to your PC with iTunes installed before you forgot your password, your iPhone might have been backed up and synced with the iTunes on your PC.
You can then use this backup to restore all your data after performing a factory reset using iTunes to reset your password. Just follow the below steps to reset the password on your iPhone using iTunes.
Open iTunes on your PC and then connect your iPhone to your PC using a USB cable.
iTunes will now automatically begin to sync the data on your iPhone to iTunes and perform a backup. Wait for the process to complete.
Once the backup of your iPhone has been made by iTunes, click on the ‘Restore iPhone’ option. iTunes will now proceed to install a new copy of iOS on your iPhone after deleting all the data on your device.
Once the installation is complete, your device will reboot and it will enter the setup process. You can choose the ‘Restore from iTunes backup’ option from here to restore all the data that has been backed up from your phone by iTunes.
After the restore process is finished, you can set a new password on your iPhone and proceed with the rest of the setup process.
How to reset your password on your iPhone when you forget it
If you follow any of the above 3 methods with the step by step instructions, you would be able to successfully reset the forgotten password on your iPhone. Once you have reset the password and have gained back access to your device, make sure to enable the iCloud or iTunes backup option.
Regularly backing up your iPhone will ensure that if you forget your password again in the future and have to factory reset your iPhone, you can restore all your data from the backup instead of losing them to the factory reset process.
