How to change your iPhone app icons in iOS 14

iOS 14 is Apple’s latest update to its iPhone operating system, and it was released recently to all supported iPhones. 

Suppose you still haven’t updated your iPhone to iOS 14. 

In that case, I highly recommend that you do as it comes with a ton of interesting new features.

One of the new updates to the iOS 14 update is that you can now change the app icons on your iPhone to anything you want.

This customizability feature allows you to choose an app icon of your choice from the Gallery app on your iPhone and apply it to any icon you want on your device.

So, if you are interested in finally being able to customize your iPhone’s home screen besides just changing the wallpaper, here is how you can change the app icons on your iPhone in iOS 14.

How to change your iPhone app icons in iOS 14

Step 1:

First, make sure you have the Apple’s Shortcuts app installed on your iPhone, if not download and install it before proceeding further.

Step 2:

Now launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone and tap on the plus icon at the app’s top right corner to proceed.


Step 3:

Click on the ‘Add action’ button on the page to create a new shortcut and then tap on ‘Scripting’ and select the ‘Open App’ option on the next page.

Step 4:

On the next page, tap on ‘Choose’ under the Scripting option.

You will now be able to see the list of all the installed apps on your iPhone.

Select the app for which you want to change the icon from this list.

Step 5:

Once you have selected the app, tap on the options icon in the top right corner on the next page to proceed.

From here, give a name for the Shortcut and then click on the ‘Add to Home Screen’ button.

Step 6:

On the next page, tap on the icon of the Shortcut under the ‘Home screen name and icon’ field. 

You will be given options to edit the Shortcut icon by either taking a new photo or choosing an existing image or a file on your iPhone.

Step 7:

After selecting the icon, you want to change for the desired app, make sure that you rename the Shortcut to the app’s name, which in this example is Calendar.

Step 8:

That’s it. Just tap on ‘Add’ on the top right corner of the screen and click on done, and the app you selected will now be added to your iPhone’s home screen with the selected app icon.

You can repeat the steps to change the icon for any app installed on your iPhone.


Once you have changed the icon of an app and added the Shortcut to your iPhone’s home screen, you might want to hide the original app icon from your home screen to avoid confusion.

To do this, just long-press on the app icon on your home screen, click on the ‘Remove app’ and then select the ‘Move to app library’ or ‘Remove from home screen’ option.
