The feature, once enabled, will allow you to send messages to your WhatsApp contacts that will automatically disappear in 7 days.
You can send disappearing messages in WhatsApp to both individual contacts and in group chats.
While you can turn on or off the disappearing messages in individual chats, only the group admins are allowed to do that in group chats.
People can still take screenshots or copy the disappearing messages within the 7 day period, so WhatsApp warns you to only use this feature with trusted people.
How does WhatsApp disappearing messages work
According to WhatsApp, the disappearing messages in WhatsApp works in the following ways:
- If a user doesn’t open WhatsApp in the seven day period, the message will disappear. However, the preview of the message might still be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened.
- When you reply to a message, the initial message is quoted. If you reply to a disappearing message, the quoted text might remain in the chat after seven days.
- If a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with disappearing messages off, the message won’t disappear in the forwarded chat.
- If a user creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be included in the backup. Disappearing messages will be deleted when a user restores from a backup.
However, media sent to the chats will be saved to your phone if automatic download is enabled even if the media file will be disappearing from the chat in 7 days.
